The Bafta Film Awards have released a diverse nominations list for 2021. Four women are up for best director, and 16 out of 24 acting nominees are from ethnic minority groups. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this year’s nominations are “the most diverse nominations list ever seen in the British Academy’s history.”
It comes after the British Academy Film Awards, the British equivalent of the Academy Awards, faced backlash last year and saw #BaftasSoWhite trending, after not one actor of colour was nominated.
In a stark contrast to 2020, this year’s sees actors including Daniel Kaluuya, Riz Ahmed, Dominique Fishback, Tahar Rahim, Bukky Bakray, Adarsh Gourav and the late Chadwick Boseman among the 16 nominees from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Chloe Zhao is up for best director again for Nomadland, a gong she took home at the recent Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.
